ein bisschen meer wollten wir auf jeden fall auch sehen, während unseres diesjährigen osterurlaubs in der TOSKANA! also machten wir uns für einen tagesausflug von MONTEBUONI aus auf den weg nach LIVORNO. 2-2½ stunden benötigten wir, um an die küste zu gelagen. länger, als wir eigentlich dachten, aber die fahrt lohnte sich dennoch, auch für nur einen tag. es reichte für einen besuch und einen kleinen einkauf im MERCATO CENTRALE, zum essen gehen im coolen und völlig unitalienischen SURFER JOE’S diner und einem langen spaziergang auf der wunderbaren, schachbrettgemusterten STRANDPROMENADE livornos. begleitet mich doch einfach noch mal zurück dorthin… zuerst gehen wir auf den markt!

we definitely wanted to see a little bit of the ocean, when we were on our easter vacation in TUSCANY lately! so one day we started off from MONTEBUONI for a day trip to LIVORNO. it took us 2-2½ hours to get to the tuscan coast. it was a longer drive than we originally thought, but it was worth it. it was all good for visiting the central market “MERCATO CENTRALE”, for having some burgers at the cool and completely un-italian SURFER JOE’S diner and a long walk along the livornos beautiful seafront BOARDWALK. join me on our trip today… let’s start with the farmers market!

wir lieben märkte und markthallen! nirgendwo anders kann man so gut auf kulinarische entdeckungsreise gehen und das echte leben pulsiert sehen! an diesem tag pulsierte im MERCATO CENTRALE allerdings nicht mehr ganz so viel, denn wir hatten ja eine ganze weile für fahrt nach livorno gebraucht und es war schon nach mittag. den zentralmarkt fanden wir in einer beeidruckenden jugendstil-markthalle an der via del cardinale ecke via buontalenti {sie ist montags bis samstags von 7:30 – 13:30 uhr geöffnet}. leider waren viele besitzer der rund 180 marktstände schon mit dem auf- und einräumen ihrer waren beschäftigt, als wir ankamen. aber an etlichen ständen herrschte noch ein rest einkaufstrubel.

wir schlenderten durch die reihen und bereuten wieder einmal, dass wir keine kühlbox im auto hatten. denn es lachten uns so viele köstlichkeiten an, die wir gern gekauft hätten. aber ein bisschen süßkram auf die hand geht natürlich immer. herr P. sorgte für einen lauten lacher, als er für sich und das fräulein am bäckerstand versehentlich canneloni statt cannoli ordern wollte. haha! mein fall sind diese mit creme gefüllten gebäckröllchen ja nicht so, aber den beiden schmeckte es. und obwohl wir es ja nicht so mit der weintrinkerei haben, konnten wir nicht umhin, uns einen frisch aus dem fass abgefüllten biowein für den abend mitzunehmen. {anm. d. red.: ich spinne tatsächlich nicht, wenn ich sage, ich vertrage wein nunmal nicht. an dem bewussten abend war mir tatsächlich nach 2 halben gläsern duun und flau zumute. da half auch das bio nix! ;)}. aber jetzt hatten wir vor allem erst einmal hunger und hatten auch bereits ein spezielles restaurantziel auf unserem plan…

we love farmers markets and market halls! it’s always the best place for culinary experiences plus you’re right at the pulse of life. well, there wasn’t that much pulsing anymore at the MERCATO CENTRALE that day, because we arrived late after our long drive to the coast. we found the central market in a stunning art nouveau market hall at the via del cardinale / corner via buontalenti. {opening hours are monday to saturday 7:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m}.
it was a pity that many of the marketeers were already putting away their goods to close their stands soon. but on the corridors there was still some food shopping going on.

we strolled through the aisles and once again regretted not having a cooler box in the car. so many delicious stuff caught our eye. at least mr. P. and the fräulein had some sweet treats on the go. everybody was laughing out loud when stephan accidentally ordered canneloni instead of cannoli.
haha! well, these little cream pastry rolls are really not my cuppa tea, but my lovelies liked them. a little later we couldn’t help purchasing some organic wine, fresh from the barrel. {author’s note: i really don’t talk trash when i say that my body just doesn’t tolerate wine. i was all wrecked after having only two half glasses. and the organic production didn’t help either! ;)} but however, we were getting hungry and had already figured out some place to eat in advance…

burger essen im american diner SURFER JOE’S

den restaurant-tipp für das SURFER JOE’S DINER hatten wir im *lonely planet TOSKANA reiseführer {LP ist unser all-time favorite, wenn es um reiseführer geht} gefunden. wir fanden den laden dann in dem gebäude, in dem sich auch livornos AQUARIUM befindet. dafür hatten wir an diesem tag leider nicht genug zeit, schade eigentlich. das nächste mal! im surfer joe’s gibt es, neben dem typisch amerikanischen retro-diner-ambiente, burger, pancakes und milk shakes, abends auch schon mal DJ-mucke und live jam sessions. das sollten wir leider nicht erleben, denn wir waren ja am nachmittag dort. hungrig orderten wir drei surfer joe’s special. der burger war okay, doch wir waren ein bisschen enttäuscht von der in der speisekarte gelobten “secret surfin” sauce”. nun ja, ich gebe zu, wir sind auch echt ziemlich verwöhnt, was burger und die dazugehörigen saucen angeht… wo auch immer wir jenseits von zuhause burger essen, haperts meist an einer richtig guten saucenauswahl. wir waren trotzdem happy mit diesem plätzchen. ein bisschen amerika-feeling in italien ist auch mal ganz cool. die lage des diners war außerdem unschlagbar… direkt an der zauberhaften strandpromenade. super, um gleich nach dem essen einen spaziergang zu machen.

we found a restaurant tip mentioning SURFER JOE’S DINER in our lonely planet TUSCANY travel guide {LP is our all-time favorite, when it comes to travel guides}. the diner was located right in the basement of the livorno AQUARIUM. too bad that we didn’t have the time to visit it that day. well. hopefully next time! the surfer joe’s is a really nice american retro diner place to have burgers, pancakes and milk shakes. moreover there are DJ and live music jam sessions at night. we only experienced the food though, as we popped in at the afternoon. we were quite hungry and ordered three surfer joe’s specials. the burger was pretty okay. we were a little disapointed about the “secret surfin” sauce” vowed in the menue though. but yeah, admittedly we are kinda spoiled concerning burger sauces. whenever we’re having some beyond the homemade burgers at home, we’re picky with the sauces. the most restaurants hardly have really great burger sauces.
nevertheless we liked this place. especially for it’s cool and completely un-italian interior and it’s lovely location at the seafront. the view already invited us to have a walk after our meal.

spazieren gehen an der strandpromenade TERRAZZA MASCAGNI

die elegante TERRAZZA MASCAGNI ist auf jeden fall einen ausgedehnten bummel wert. ich war gleich sehr verliebt in das schwarz-weiße schachbrettmuster und die steinernen balustraden der in den 1920ern gebauten uferpromenade. teenager saßen dort auf der mauer und lasen, kleinkinder sausten mit ihren kleinen fahrrädern durch die gegend und schleckten eis, coole jungs cruisten auf ihren longboards, ältere damen trafen sich auf einen kleinen plausch und die alten männer angelten im meer. in der ferne sahen wir man surfer in der brandung ihre wellen reiten. bilderbuchmäßig… und ein gelungener abschluss für einen wunderbaren tagesausflug mit etwas toskanischer meeresbrise in der nase!

i instantly fell in love with the elegant TERRAZZA MASCAGNI that was built in the 1920s. it’s charming black and white chess patterned boardwalk with balustrades was stunning. along the way, teenagers were sitting on the wall reading, little children swooshed by on their little bikes and had ice cream, cool boys were cruising on their longboards, elderly women met for a chat and old men fished by the sea. we could see some surfers far away, riding the waves and we had a little tuscan sea breeze in our noses. a picture book place! and also a lovely ending of our day at livorno…

sherpas wissen ganz genau wo es lang geht, nicht nur beim bergsteigen im himalaya, sondern auch wenn es um lokale esskultur geht! es ist noch gar nicht lange her, dass die NEW YORK TIMES in einem ihrer artikel den begriff der “food sherpas” prägte und einen weltweiten trend zum thema machte. kulinarische touren jenseits der ausgetretenen touristen-pfade und das erleben authentischer, lokaler produkte und küche, das ist es, was eine food sherpa tour bietet. die leidenschaft für die kulinarik und die esskultur einer region treibt diese bewegung an. “locals” teilen ihre persönlichen empfehlungen für regionale köstlichkeiten und auch ihre lieblings-restaurants auf einer food tour. als ich im oktober ein paar tage in MÁLAGA verbrachte, durfte ich eigene erfahrungen mit den SPAIN FOOD SHERPAS machen. ich sag nur… köstlichst!

kurz bevor wir unseren letzten BERLIN trip leider unglücklich vorzeitig abbrechen mussten, gelang uns noch ein kurzer abstecher in die ARMINIUSMARKTHALLE in berlin moabit. hier werden schon seit 1891 waren und lebensmittel verkauft und ein ordentlicher hauch nostalgie schwingt in der kulinarischen duft-offensive mit, wenn man die halle betritt. ihr wisst ja, wir lieben jede art von MÄRKTEN sehr! leider hatten wir nicht so wirklich viel zeit mit dem bereits kränkelnden fräulein im schlepptau. aber wir waren direkt verliebt in diese mischung zwischen alt eingesessenen berliner imbiss-institutionen {wie dem imbiss an dem früer die DREI DAMEN VOM GRILL gedreht wurden!!!}, lokalen spezialitäten und einfach ganz normalen, bodenständigen marktständen mit fisch, wurst, käse, gemüse & obst. richtig gut essen gehen kann man dort auch {aber dazu später mehr}. heute nehme ich euch einfach mit durch die stände der markthalle und lasse euch ein paar eindrücke da {und falls ihr gern noch mehr über den markt in der arminiushalle wissen wollt, habe ich HIER in der berliner MOPO einen klasse artikel darüber gefunden}.

well, we unfortunately had to end our BERLIN trip far too early some time ago. but at least we managed a short stop at the ARMINIUSMARKTHALLE in
berlin moabit. it’s a place were people sold goods and groceries since1891 and when you come in, nostalgia is in the air as well as delicious smells. you know we really love all kinds of FARMERS MARKETS!
too sad, that we were kind of hurrying around, because the little fräulein didn’t feel so good that day. but we were all smitten with it’s awesome mixture of traditional, old-established snack bars, local specialities and groceries. it’s also a good place to eat out {i will show you in another posting}. today i’ll take you on a walk through the market hall stalls and let you get an impression of this loevely place {if you want to read more about this market there is a pretty interesting article of a berlin newspaper HERE – unforunately in german only, feel free to use an online translator}.

eingekauft haben wir tatsächlich auch ein bisschen und zwar ein paar luftgetrocknete chili-salamis von MARCHÉ DE CATHERINE. wieder zu hause angekommen, waren die allerdings viel zu schnell verputzt, denn sie waren undglaublich lecker! wie schön, dass man salamis auch online bestellen kann, denn bis wir das nächste mal nach berlin kommen wird es ja noch ein weilchen dauern.

back home they was gone far too quickly, because they really were devine! good thing, that they can be ordered online too, because it will take some time until we will come back to berlin.

wir kommen aber auf jeden fall wieder, denn hier in der markthalle haben wir dann noch ein ganz neues berliner lieblingsplätzchen gefunden. aber davon erzähle ich euch die tage mal etwas ausfühlicher. für heute verabschiebe ich mich ins wochenende. ich bin schon wieder unterwegs, allerdings nicht in richtung berlin sondern auf die andere seite des weißwurst-äquators. vielleicht schaut ihr ja mal auf meinem INSTAGRAM vorbei. dort gibt es sicherlich ein paar wochenend-schnappschüsse… happy weekend euch allen!

nun, eingentlich wollte ich euch heute mal wieder etwas weiter weg entführen. denn meine mom, meine große kleine schwester und mein schwager waren gerade in NYC und in miami unterwegs und mich packte das fernweh so, dass ich in eigenen fotos von dort gestöbert habe. aber… wie das manchmal so ist bei erinnerungen. da kann man sich leicht mal drin verlieren und die zeit dabei vergessen, die richtigen bilder zu finden.

so nehme ich euch, anstatt nach NEW YORK, heute doch noch einmal schnell mit ins schöne ANTWERPEN… an einem samstag auf den ZATERDAGMARKT.

well, actually i planned to travel a little more far away with you today. because my mom, my sister and my brother in law just spent some time in NYC and miami. that made me browse through my photo archive and sweet memories. but then… i completey frittered away my time, searching for the right pics.

so instead of taking you to NEW YORK, i once again take you to pretty ANTWERP for a walk across the ZATERDAGMARKT on a saturday. .

ich liebe wochenmärkte, ihr nicht auch? wo auch immer wir hin reisen,
muss ich sie besuchen, muss schauen und kosten, muss farben und gerüche
aufsaugen. köstlich!

i really love farmers markets! what about you? where ever we travel to i always must visit at least one. i watch, i taste, i soak up the colors and the flavors. delicious!

obwohl ich es ganz klar im urlaub bevorzuge, bekocht zu werden, anstatt selbst zu kochen [nicht am herd stehen zu müssen gehört für mich persönlich einfach zum urlaubsgefühl dazu], bedauere ich es bei einer solchen auswahl dann doch oft ein bisschen, nur ein hotelzimmer ohne küche zu haben. bei all dieser frische!

although i definitely prefer not to cook in our holidays, but to go for restaurants [not to have to stand at the stove is one of my personal vacation principles], there’s always a little regret of not having a kitchen in our hotel room. look at all this freshness!

und bilde ich es mir eigentlich ein, oder haben die belgier [und auch die holländer] immer die grandioseste auswahl an frischen blumen auf ihren märkten? schade, dass es sich auch hier nicht lohnt, einen ganzen arm voll davon mitzunehmen, wenn man sich auf reisen befindet.

dafür lohnt sich ein besuch des marktes fast schon allein… die ersten frischen belgischen waffeln und dann noch in köstlichen variationen. mit cranberries, apfel, zimt, walnüssen oder schokostückchen! zugegebenermaßen waren nämlich unsere waffelerfahrungen bis zu dem zeitpunkt eher entäuschend gewesen. fast überall gab es nur vorgebackene und lediglich aufgewärmte waffeln. hier hingegen kamen sie frisch und dampfend aus dem waffeleisen. lecker.

the fresh waffles alone are worth visiting the market. admittedly these were the very first fresh made ones we had and they came in yummy tastes with cranberries, apple, cinnamon, walnuts and chocolate chips! all other waffles we had that week were disappointing as they were pre-baked and just re-heated then. these were freshly made in front of our eyes and amazing!

falls ihr selbst einmal über den ZATERDAGMARKT schlendern wollt… er findet immer samstags von 8:00 bis 16:00 uhr auf dem theaterplein statt und ist teilweise überdacht.

sonntags findet von 8:00 bis 13:00 uhr an gleicher stelle übrigens der VOGELENMARKT statt, welcher sich bis zum oudevaatplaats erstreckt. die geschichte dieses sonntagsmarkts, der ursprünglich ein geflügelmarkt war, geht zurück bis in das 16. jahrhundert. heute werden dort, wie auf jedem wochenmarkt lebensmittel und sonstiges angeboten, aber es gibt auch heute wohl noch einige händler, die dort vögel verkaufen. leider konnten wir das nicht überprüfen, denn am sonntag schüttete es wie aus eimern! da half auch die teilweise überdachung nichts… die marktbesucher blieben zu hause und die markthändler zum größten teil auch gleich.

wart ihr schon mal auf dem vogelenmarkt in antwerpen? trägt er seinen namen noch zu recht? da wäre ich ja neugierig…

if you like to visit the ZATERDAGMARKT yourself… it’s located at theaterplein [partly under a glass canopy] on saturdays from 8:00 a.m. till 4:00 p.m.

on sundays you will find the VOGELENMARKT [bird market] at the same location but expanding all the way to oudevaatplaats. the history of that market goes back to the 16th century, when it was a poultry market. although nowadays the vendors sell food and other stuff, like they do on a farmers market, you are supposed to finde some market stalls selling birds as well. unfortunately i have no proof, because on our sunday it was raining cats and dogs. not only the visitors preferred to stay at home, but also most of the vendors stayed away.

have you ever been on the vogelenmarket? is it true that they still sell birds there? i’m curious to know…

travel tuesday | unser perfekter tag in portland maine #1

in PORTLAND MAINE haben wir auf unserem NEUENGLAND ROADTRIP zwei nächte verbracht. wenn mans genau nimmt hatten wir also eigentlich nur einen kompletten tag in der stadt, wie das nunmal oft so ist, wenn man eine rundreise macht. da heißt es natürlich umsomehr, seine zeit gut zu nutzen. unseren tag in portland haben wir so sehr genutzt, dass ich es nicht einmal schaffe, ihn in ein posting zu quetschen. deshalb gibt es einfach heute den teil #1 unseres perfekten tages und morgen teil #2.

when we were on our NEW ENGLAND ROADTRIP we spent two nights in PORTLAND MAINE. we only had one full day to explore the town, but that’s the way it is sometimes being on a round trip. so we tried to see as much as possible. actually our day was so brimful that i wasn’t able to squeeze it in only one blog posting. that’s the reason why there will be a part #1 of our perfect day in portland today and a part #2 tomorrow.

nun… das wetter war erst einmal nicht so wirklich perfekt, aber davon wollten wir uns auch nicht die laune verderben lassen. am besten man startet mit einem guten frühstück in den tag. wir taten dies auf äußerst leckere weise im HOT SUPPA! eggs benedict mit geechie boy grits [maisgrütze] und frischen früchten kann ich nur empfehlen. bon appetit!

well… the weather wasn’t really perfect that morning, but we don’t let that spoil our mood. it’s always good to start with a proper breakfast and we had a really yummy one at HOT SUPPA! i can really recommend eggs benedict with geechie boy grits and fresh fruit. bon appetit!

regenschauer übersteht man ja am bestgelauntesten beim shopping, wenn ihr mich fragt. portland hat unzählige vintage shops und wir stöberten bei MATERIAL OBJECTS. der laden war einfach genial sortiert und hatte richtig coole schätzchen im repertoire. wir wunderten uns fast, dass die preise noch so bodenständig waren. wir gingen mit einem stifte-mäppchen, einer organza-bluse, einem tollen spitzen-sweater und einem neongrünen spitzen-shirt. alles zusammen für 21$.

if you ask me, the best thing to try to avoid rain showers is go shopping. portland has so many gorgeous vintage stores, so we stopped by at MATERIAL OBJECTS. the shop was brilliantly sorted and had some most gorgeous stuff on stock. we almost wondered about the reasonable prices at such a cool place.we left with a pencil case, an organza blouse, an awesome crochet lace sweater and a neon-yellow crochet tee for only 21$ all together.

unser nächster shopping stop war dann bei PINECONE + CHICKADEE. der laden ist eine supercoole mischung aus alt und neu. ich war drauf und dran die fisher price spielzeugkamera mit den märchenbildern darin mitzunehmen. heute ärgere ich mich, dass ich es nicht getan habe.

our next stop was at PINECONE + CHICKADEE. the shop offers a supecool mixture of vintage and new things. i was just about to buy the fisher price toy camera with adorable fairy tale pictures inside. i still regret that i didn’t take it home with me.

soviel shop-bummelei macht hungrig. wir machten uns also auf zu einer institution portlands, dem PUBLIC MARKET HOUSE. leider musste der ursprünglich viel größere public market vor einigen jahren aus dem damaligen marktgebäude ausziehen. einige der verkäufer fanden hier ein neues “zuhause” und wir einen leckeren zwischendurch snack.

strolling through awesome shops made everybody hungry. so we headed for one portland institution, the PUBLIC MARKET HOUSE. though it’s a pity that the original and even bigger public market had to move out from the big market hall a few years ago. but some of the vendors found a new “home” here and we found a yummy snack.

nach meinem wunderschönen samstag auf der ILE DE RÉ neulich, machte ich mich nach dem frühstück auf den weg zurück aufs festland. meine reise durch die regoin POITOU CHARENTES sollte mich an diesem tag ins grüne führen. und wenn ich grün sage, dann meine ich aber richtig grün!

after my lovely saturday on the ILE DE RÉ the other day, i hit the road again to return to continental france. my journey through the POITOU CHARENTES region should lead me to lush greens… and i really mean green, if i say green!

vorher musste ich auf der insel aber noch einen kleinen zwischenstop machen, denn ich kam am dörfchen LA FLOTTE vorbei. ich hatte gelesen, dass der ort zu den “les plus belles villages de france” gehört, eine auszeichnung, die dörfern wegen ihres kulturerbes und besonders hübschen erscheinungsbild verliehen wird. das konnte ich ja schließlich nicht links liegen lassen…

but before i left the island i had to stop for a while at the little village LA FLOTTE which was on my way. reading about the ile de ré i had learned that this place belongs to “les plus belles villages de france”. it’s an award for the most beautiful villages with cultural heritage. you understand i couldn’t just pass by…

ich stellte den wagen etwas außerhalb des zentrums ab und spazierte zu fuß in richtung ortsmitte. es war sonntag-vormittag und niemand war auf den straßen und gassen zu sehen. wirklich niemand! was ich so sah, gefiel mir schon mal ganz gut… weiß getünchte häuser, die altbekannten hellgrünen, ausgeblichenen fensterläden, die ich schon in saint martin de ré so schön fand, und blumen in jeder mauerritze.

i parked my car a little distance outside and took a walk into the center of the village. it was late sunday morning, almost noon and there wasn’t anyone on the streets or in the alleys. really nobody! i like what i saw though… white, limewashed houses and the same pale white shutters i liked at saint martin de ré so much. also pretty flowers in every small corner.

zumindest im bereich der promenade schien man sich darauf vorzubereiten. dass irgendwann einmal menschen vorn irgendwoher kommen müssten, hungrige vornehmlich. selbst das hübsche karussell stand ganz verwaist im hafen und wartete auf ein kinderlachen.

at least at the seafront i saw some guys preparing for guests at their restaurants. so eventually and somehow people would come from somewhere. probably hungry people. but at that moment even the pretty carousel waited for some children’s laughter.

und dann sah ich irgendwann einen tordurchgang mit einem schild “marché”. ich dachte mir noch, an einem sonntag wird dort ja wohl kaum markt sein, aber als ich dann durch das tor auf einen hof gelangte tobte dort plötzlich das leben! die stände standen dicht beieinander, menschenmassen tummelten sich davor und kauften köstlichkeiten ein.

and then i saw an archway with a sign that said “marché”. i didn’t think there would really be a local market on sunday morning, but when i went through i found myself in midst of pulsing life! the market booths stood side by side, offering the most delicious stuff and there were masses of people chattering and doing their groceries.

wo waren diese menschen bitte alle hergekommen? die straßen waren doch wirklich menschenleer gewesen! da beschlich mich dann zum ersten mal auf dieser reise (es sollte nicht das letzte mal bleiben!) der verdacht, dass franzosen tatsächlich apparieren können. und zwar vorzugsweise dort, wo es köstlichkeiten zu kaufen und zu essen gibt. sie gehen nicht dorthin, sie erscheinen plötzlich! wie die zauberer bei harry potter. ich bin mittlerweile ganz sicher, die können das. angelockt durch den köstlichen geruch der französischen spezialitäten, oder so. nicht umsonst ist gutes essen und trinken des franzosen priorität no.1 …

but were did all these people come from? i mean, the streets were deserted! this made me suspect (for the first but not for the last time during my journey!) that french people don’t go anywhere, they apparate! they apparate preferably at places where good food can be found. they don’t walk, they suddenly appear. seriously. they can do it, like in the harry potter books! i’m sure. mabe they are guided by the delicious smell of delicacies. i mean, after all good food is french priority no.1 …

… und wenn ich mir das alles so ansehe, wen wunderts? das mit dem genießen, das haben sie nunmal drauf. leider konnte ich selbst keinen größeren einkauf starten, obwohl mich wurst und käse wirklich sehr anlachten, denn ich hatte ja noch einen langen tag vor mir. also bewaffnete ich mich nur mit einem knusprigen baguette, das konnte ich auch wärhend der fahrt knabbern, und machte mich auf den weg zurück zum auto.

.. and looking at all this deliciousness, it’s no surprise, right? the french really know how to enjoy. unfortunately i couldn’t buy that much, although the cheese and smoked sausages really made me drool. i got myself a fresh baguette with me to nosh on my drive before i walked back to my car.

wieder niemand auf den straßen. unglaublich. nee, ich bin wirklich sicher, die können diese apparier-sache… die gehen gar nicht irgendwohin, die erscheinen direkt dort.

again i didn’t see anyone in the streets. unbelievable. well, i’m really sure… they can do this apparating-thing! they just don’t walk the streets.

dann stellte ich noch fest, dass französiche austern-trecker auch nicht schneller fahren als deutsche runkelrüben-trecker. ich stand erst mal im stau, aber das gab mir immerhin die gelegenheit, noch ein paar schnappschüsse von weinfeldern aus dem auto heraus zu schießen.

one thing i noticed as well: french oyster trucks are as slow as german sugar beet trucks. they caught me in a traffic jam. but at least i had the chance to get some driveby shots of the wine fields beside the street.

ich finde ja immer noch, dass LOS ANGELES ganz zu unrecht unter einem etwas angekratzen image unter kalifornien-reisenden leidet… deshalb will ich daran heute nochmal ein bisschen polieren. L.A. mit lieben freunden zu erkunden, hat sicherlich eine ganz besondere qualität. aber ich denke, das ausflugsziel, dass wir nach unserem tag im GETTY CENTER im auge hatten, dürfte auch euch gefallen.

i still think that LOS ANGELES suffers a bit from a bad image among california travellers… so i’d like to carry on polishing it up a bit. to visit L.A. in the company of lovely friends surely is something special, but i really think you’ll like our destination we headed for after the day at the GETTY CENTER, too.

ein bisschen k.o. und mit knurrendem magen machten wir uns auf zum FARMERS MARKET. der markt ist eine institution seit 1934. das foodie-herz schlägt hier höher… neben klassischen amerikanischen appetitlichkeiten, findet man in dem freiluft food-court asiatische, latein-amerikanische und orientalische küche, obst-und gemüsestände, einen fleischer und kleine shops mit spezialitäten. definitiv ein wirlich guter ort für knurrende mägen!

we were a little tired and had a growling stomach when we started off to the FARMERS MARKET. the market is a real landmark since 1934. it makes the foodie’s heart beat faster. you can find all american classic food next to all kinds of ethnic cuisines – asian, latin-american and oriental. there are grocery stores, a butcher shop and little shops with specialities all over this outdoor food court. definitely a good place for growling stomaches!

was anna da hinten in der hand hat, ist übrigens ein riesiges stück BEEF JERKY. kann man mögen… muss man aber nicht… ;) aber man sollte zumindest gesunde zähne zum abbeißen haben.

this thingy that anna holds in her hands is a giant piece of BEEF JERKY by the way… some like it, some hate it. ;) at least you better have some healthy teeth to be able to bite it off.

nach dem besuch im farmers market wussten wir dann übrigens auch, wo die rentner von los angeles ihren tag so verbringen, mit klönen, lesen, einfach schauen, kartenspielen und damit, ihre zeit zu genießen… eine nette vorstelung, sich so den lebensabend zu vertreiben, wenn ihr mich fragt.

by the way… after visiting the farmers market we know where the L.A. pensioners spend their days with talking, reading, watching, playing cards and having a good time… a very nice idea of spending one’s sunset years, if yo ask me.

ihr findet den farmers market hier in der 3rd street ecke fairfax avenue… geöffnet ist er 7 tage die woche: montag – freitag : 9 – 21 uhr, samstag 9 – 20 uhr, sonntag 10 – 19 uhr. viel spaß!

heute wird der UNION SQUARE GREENMARKET meine kleine NYC markets-reihe abschließen. der farmers market am union square ist der größte new yorks. an vier tagen in der woche bekommt man hier frische in hülle und fülle! obst und gemüse, wie auch viele andere lebensmittel dort, sind vorzugsweise biologisch und in der region angebaut oder produziert, denn der new yorker ist nun mal sehr gesundheitsbewusst. lasst uns einfach einen kleinen spaziergang dort machen, wo auch die besten chefs der stadt gern ihre zutaten einkaufen…

a virtual stroll over the UNION SQUARE GREENMARKET will close my little NYC markets-series today. the farmers market at the union square is the biggest in new york and it’s open four days a week bursting with freshness! fruits and vegetables, as well as the other food on this market, are preferably organic and local as the new yorker is a health conscious guy. let’s take a walk around the market where the best chefs of the city come to buy their ingredients…

vor ein paar tagen, beim handtasche ausmisten, fiel mir eine visitenkarte in die hand. das kleine stück papier erinnerte mich daran, dass man meinen könnte, unsere erlebnisse der letzten new york reise hätten nur aus hurricane SANDY bestanden. aber das war natürlich längst nicht alles…

when i was mucking out my handbag the other day a business card fell into my hands. this little piece of paper reminded me that you probably think hurricane SANDY might have been the only experience of our last trip to NYC. of course it wasn’t at all…

wo auch immer wir sind, lieben wir es auf märkte zu gehen…. auf flohmärkte, wochenmärkte, fischmärkte, künstlermärkte. märkte sind immer ein spiegel des ortes, an dem man sich gerade befindet und der menschen, die dort leben. märkte sind echte “real life” plätze. ich könnte mich stundenlang nur in eine ecke setzen und alles beobachten. auch NYC hat eine ausgeprägte markt-kultur und heute nehme ich euch mit auf den NEW AMSTERDAM MARKET.

wherever in the world we travel we love to go to markets… to fleamarkets, farmers markets, fish markets, artisan markets. they all are a mirror of the city and people who live in that place. markets are so much real life places. i could just sit for hours and watch the hustle and bustle around. new york also has a market culture and today i’m going to take you on the NEW AMSTERDAM MARKET.

das sind übrigens die jungs von PORCHETTA deren visitenkarte ich in meiner handtasche wiedergefunden habe. der name ist programm, denn bei ihnen gibt es italienischen schweinerollbraten in der größe eines spanferkels. würzig, fettig und himmlisch lecker… vor allem aber mit liebe gemacht! man beachte das schild “porchetta is evacuation size!”. ich muss immer noch darüber schmunzeln, obwohl ich jetzt weiß, dass dieser ort schon in der übernächsten nacht vom wasser überschwemmt werden sollte.

these are the guys from PORCHETTA whose business card i recovered in my handbag by the way. the name says it all. they offer the most yummy italian spiced pork roast… roasted with love! please notice the sign “porchetta is evacuation size!”. it still makes me laugh, although i know that this area was all flooded the next day.

aber vor dem dicken porchetta-sandwich stand uns erst einmal der sinn nach etwas süßem. POFFERTJES!

but before having a porchetta sandwich we were in the mood for something sweet. POFFERTJES!

currently you can find the new amsterdam market at the roofed parking lot of the [historic!] FULTON FISH MARKET in lower manhattan, right at the waterfront of the east river with a nice view onto the brooklyn bridge. its located south street between beekman street and peck slip on sundays from 11am to 4pm.

nachem wir alle köstlichkeiten durchstöbert hatten… obst, gemüse, frische gebackenes brot, kekse und kuchen, hausgemachte marmeladen und pickles, ahornsirup, feine käse aus kleiner manufaktur und vieles mehr… musste dann doch so ein porchetta sandwich her!

after we strolled over the market enjoying everything like…. fruit, vegetables, fresh baked bread, cakes and cookies, homemade jams and pickles, maple sirup, fine small-batch cheeses and so much more… we surely had to have one porchetta sandwich!

das war so einer dieser momente, als ich das kärtchen fand… genau das ist das, was ich am reisen so liebe. die erinnerungen, die man vom reisen mitbringt, die nimmt einem niemand. man hat sie für immer. und manchmal braucht es nur einen ganz kleinen anlass und dann ist man wieder dort in gedanken, an einem ort, den man sehr mochte…

it was one of those moments, when i found the little card… and that’s exactely what i love so much about traveling. the memories you bring, you’ll keep forever. and sometimes it just needs a small hint to bring them back into your mind and bring you back to a place you loved….

mein allerliebstes ziel unserer ITALIENtour in diesen sommer, war weder die toscana, noch sardinien, es war eindeutig ROM! ja, trotz der brüllenden hitze im juli. ich liebe brüllende hitze. ich habe es genossen, dass die römer kaum die sonst übliche SIESTA machen und das in rom das leben tobt… den ganzen tag und ohne pause!

und weil heute MARKTTAG ist, nehme ich euch mit auf den CAMPO DEI FIORI. dort findet fast jeden tag am morgen einer der beliebtesten obst- und gemüsemärkte roms statt. wunderbar trubelig und bunt ist er und wenn man eine pause braucht, setzt man sich einfach auf einen cappuccino in eine der zahlreichen TRATTORIAS rund um den platz und beobachtet das marktleben ganz gemütlich.

the destination i loved the most during our ITALY trip this summer wasn’t the tuscany or sardinia… it was ROME! yes. i loved it so much despite the blistering heat. actually i love blistering heat. well, and i must admit i also loved the fact that the romans mostly don’t care about SIESTA times… life is humming there. all day long!

and just because it’s MARKET DAY today, let’s take a walk around the CAMPO DEI FIORI. there’s an everyday (exept sunday) farmers market in the morning on the piazza. it’s one of the most famous markets in rome and so no wonder there is an awesome hustle and bustle around this place. if you need a little rest, you just sit down in one of the many TRATTORIAS and have yourself a cappuccino. just relax and watch the market life…

in rom haben wir uns komplett verliebt. wir kommen wieder!

we really fell in love with rome. we’ll be back fur sure!
