travel tuesday | our eats and sleep in toronto

oh man… where to begin after a three week roadtrip through some canadian cities and along new englands coast? where to start with so many experiences and impressions and even more pictures? i’d love to show and tell everything at once. but it’s probably better to start with the beginning of our trip… in TORONTO. and with the essentials…. eat and sleep… and eat!

we had our very first canadian breakfast at the SENATOR diner… a recommendation of our lovely  apartment host brenna. so it’s not quite true that this place is only a tourist magnet, because also locals dine here. but it’s true that the restaurant is the oldest of whole toronto… and that the food there is very yummy.

the servings are sumptious, like you expect it in north america. you hardly handle them. the layers of french toast [with a pinch of cinnamon!] made the whole family happy. the huevos rancheros – served all day –  fill you up for half a day! the latte comes in huge mugs. a super friendly talk with the lovely waitress, who has relatives living here in germany in hamburg and augsburg, is on top and for free… als well as the coffee refill [something that the mister really loooves!]. awesome!

we had a very warm welcome by our lovely apartment host brenna. she provided us with local beer and apple juice in the fridge [as if she knew what we like!], which was so nice. she also prepared a little notebook with restaurant-, bar-, shopping- und sightseeing-tips, including a street map with matching marks, for her guests. we really appreciated that! there was a streetcar station right in front of the house, very convenient. one should be aware though, that staying that central at one of the main streets also means that it’s not all quiet at night. [dear house builders on the north american continent, when will you learn isolated windows? no offence.] well, we were pepareped to have some noise so it was all fine with us. the place was really cozy and so many nice things and neighborhoods were in walking distance…

wirklich an meine Grenzen gestoßen.
luzia pimpinella BLOG | sommerstippvisite: blickgewinkelt| travel |reisebericht und fotos von einer kamer-farm in kasachstan | photography and travel report from a camel farm in kasachstan
Dieser
Morgen ist still.

luzia pimpinella BLOG | sommerstippvisite: blickgewinkelt| travel |reisebericht und fotos von einer kamer-farm in kasachstan | photography and travel report from a camel farm in kasachstan

Obwohl
Bakosch, Ell, Luk, Arjerke, Burabaj, Kastuk.

Meine
luzia pimpinella BLOG | sommerstippvisite: blickgewinkelt| travel |reisebericht und fotos von einer kamer-farm in kasachstan | photography and travel report from a camel farm in kasachstan

luzia pimpinella BLOG | sommerstippvisite: blickgewinkelt| travel |reisebericht und fotos von einer kamer-farm in kasachstan | photography and travel report from a camel farm in kasachstan
luzia pimpinella BLOG | sommerstippvisite: blickgewinkelt| travel |reisebericht und fotos von einer kamer-farm in kasachstan | photography and travel report from a camel farm in kasachstan
luzia pimpinella BLOG | sommerstippvisite: blickgewinkelt| travel |reisebericht und fotos von einer kamer-farm in kasachstan | photography and travel report from a camel farm in kasachstan

luzia pimpinella BLOG | sommerstippvisite: blickgewinkelt| travel |reisebericht und fotos von einer kamer-farm in kasachstan | photography and travel report from a camel farm in kasachstan

aufregenden Tage Revue passieren lassen.
Warum man
All
luzia pimpinella BLOG | sommerstippvisite: blickgewinkelt| travel |reisebericht und fotos von einer kamer-farm in kasachstan | photography and travel report from a camel farm in kasachstan

Wieder
luzia pimpinella BLOG | sommerstippvisite: blickgewinkelt| travel |reisebericht und fotos von einer kamer-farm in kasachstan | photography and travel report from a camel farm in kasachstan

luzia pimpinella BLOG | sommerstippvisite: gastblogger nähschotte banner

Over the last 15 years, I have been to
China numerous times, but my favourite Chinese city is still Beijing.
A work assignment took me to Beijing in April this year, and I made
the most of the free days I had in between meetings to join friends
for a tour of the city. City tours are the best option for a little
Scottish guy with pale skin, who could probably get sunburn from the
light bulb in the fridge.

Beijing is popular with tourists and
travellers from all over the world. There are so many contrasting
elements in this city, which has four times as many inhabitants as my
native land. High rise flats look down on hutongs (traditional
neighbourhoods), bicycles stand next to Porsche Cayennes, and 100,000
Volkswagen Santanas, a model that hasn’t been used in Europe for
about 20 years, constitute the standard taxi.

sehen kann?I only speak a few words of Chinese,
and most of these are used for ordering in restaurants. My bad
Mandarin still amuses the Chinese friends I studied with in Britain.
We take in a few of the standard tourist sights before deciding that
we want to see something “typically Chinese”.

luzia pimpinella BLOG | sommerstippvisite: nähschotte | reise: erlebnisse in peking | travel: my beijing experiences
mal abnehmen sollte.

Beijing has
wonderfully spacious parks, and you can walk around for hours and
indulge in some “people watching”. We came across an outdoor card game and
asked if we could take a photograph. The players readily gave their
permission, but then their attention turned to my somewhat wide girth
– the Chinese see nothing wrong with patting a tubby gentleman on
his tummy in the hope it will bring them kwàilè (luck,
happiness, joy). At this point, I made a mental note to lose some
weight.
luzia pimpinella BLOG | sommerstippvisite: nähschotte | reise: erlebnisse in peking | travel: my beijing experiences

For those who don’t play cards, there
are plenty of other activities, and quite a few of China’s senior
citizens like to keep fit by dancing, using the public parks for the
purpose.

echt.
Shopping is a popular pastime in
Beijing, and you can buy everything and anything. Some shopping
centres are renowned for their “designer” goods. Take Wangfujing,
for example. Rarely have I seen a street with so many shops with
brand names like “De Beers” and “Rolex” in the windows, all
official stores.

As I prefer eating to shopping, we
headed to “Gui Jie”, or “Ghost street”, for some traditional
food and entertainment. There are lanterns everywhere, and we went to
a restaurant with an entertainment programme. First a few chefs
showed us how to make noodles to music, and then we saw a spectacular
show where the dancer changed his face mask in the twinkling of an
eye. It was quite amazing.
The only thing I miss is a breath of
fresh air – you can’t buy that. As you can see on the aerial
picture of the Forbidden City, the air is somewhat polluted. A face
mask is a sensible accessory.

Despite the poor air quality, I will
continue to visit my friends in Beijing. I can use English nearly
everywhere, although 50 words of Chinese can take you a long way –
sometimes further than you think. If you ask for directions, you
might well be given directions to anywhere at all. This is not done
out of malice, my friend, Lei Yang, assures me. It’s more a
question of not losing face, which the person might do if (s)he had
to admit that they didn’t know where the place you were looking for
was!
Matthew.

well, today we’ll travel on together on my trip through the POITOU CHARENTES region… after my spontaneous flying-visit at LA FLOTTE on the ILE de RÉ that morning, i was on my way into some very green landscape. actually head off to see the “green venice” [la venise verte]. that’s what they call the MARAIS POITEVIN, that marsh- and swampland north from la rochelle.

ganz für mich allein. und los gings…

when i arrived at the EMBACADÉRE CARDINAUD, which is the embarking station for cruising the marschland-canals by boat, they already expected me there. “aaah! vous êtes
la blogueuse!?” as being a “bloggöse” they got me my very own boat and my very own skipper… and off we went!

luzia pimpinella BLOG | travel tuesday | marais poitevin, das grüne venedig | marais poitevin, the green venice

although it was sunday, there wasn’t very much going on that day. even my boat captain ADRIEN was bewildered that we hardly saw any other boats during our one and a half hours tour along the canals. there are days when there are like traffic jams on the water streets, he told me. but that day it was totally idyllic and calm.

there was only silence, a little chirring, a bit of birds chirping and the sound of the “pigouille” [the stake] of my boatman… every now and then we heard the flap of the wings of some startled gray herons. but every time i was to slow to grab my camera to take a picture of these beautiful birds. the whole landscape was so mystical. i’ve never been to our german SPREEWALD region in brandenburg, but this was pretty much like i imagine it to be, too. all mystic and mysterious.

the difference to the spreewald is, that the marais poitevin channels are all manmade. whereas the german spreewald landscape is mostly formed by the natural course of the spree river. as of the medivial the marshland people in france made a virtue out of the necessity and built the channels to create fertile lots of land for farming.

my skipper adrien was explicitly chosen to guide me by the way. when he doesn’t stake the “plate” [the black flat bottom boats] through the channels he is a student of english and german language. they thought he could practice his german skills a bit, explaining me everything. too bad that we both felt more comfortable in talking english. he told me about his wishes and plans to spend some time in germany for his studies. maybe in berlin… oh yes, of course, berlin is the place to be for young people. right?

as i said, we didn’t meet many other boats, but we met some very gentle and pretty guys…. les vaches du marais [the cows of marais]! the white cows spend the summer months on the lush meadows of the marshland. they probably do not only eat green gras but also millions of buttercups, i suppose. they come there by boat as well! i wonder what they feel like on their boat-journey. i heard that cows can’t swim? do you know if that’s true?

adrien also showed me how to set the water on fire! there are bubbles of methan gas [developed by decomposed leaves] in the mud of the channels. he poked in the mud with his pigouille and bubbles of methane came up from the ground, then he inflamed the gas with a lighter.

at some point we arrived at the picturesque little village of COULON, where i should spend the night.

after i finished my boat trip and said goodbye to my “plate”-skipper adrien, i headed off to check in at my bed & breakfast HOTEL AU MARAIS. like the most houses in the village it had the blue wooden shutters i liked so much…

i was pleased by my bright and friendly room and the lovely view on the water from my window. perfect. but i hadn’t any time to relax here as i had an appointment at the local museum, the MAISON DU MARAIS POITEVIN for a guided tour.

luzia pimpinella BLOG | reise: museum MAISON DU MARAIS, coulon | travel: museum MAISON DU MARAIS, coulon

wollte. bitte.

i learned about the history and the development of the marshland, about the cultivation, about flora and fauna here and about the art of boat constructing. i also learned that you can catch eels with an umbrella… honestly i really think eels are disgusting. i hoped not to find one on my dinner plate. please.

i found the original marshland home at the museum very interesting. it was typical that way in former times. they had little ovens to pre-heat the beds, as living in the swampland, the bedding was always damp and cold.
wherever i travel alone, i ask myself… would my family like this place? speaking of the boat trip through the channels – definitely YES! when it comes to the museum experience i would tend to say no. the tour was interesting and informative, but the topic is not that much exciting for kids. they probably get bored as captivating and really fascinating exhibits, which make museums interesting for children, are missing somehow. in order too keep my report honest, i thought i should tell you this. with children you better get yourself some ice cream and go off to explore the little village and the riverside.

COULON can be exlored by foot very easily as it is quite a small village. when i took a walk in the evening to have a look where my place for dinner was, i had that kind of suspicion again… i thought that the french really apparate. because again there was noboby in the streets… except me and some swallows bringing dinner for their offspring! nobody walking the alleys but then suddenly the restaurants were crowded with people. i mean, how do they do this without going there? however… at least there was a boy playing football in front of my dinner place…

another eventful day was over. that evening i missed my family a lot and i felt once again, that having dinner all alone is no fun… even if the food [no eel!] is delicious. i was looking forward to my cozy bed with fresh white bed linens and also to tomorrows dinner at LA ROCHELLE. i would have lovely company then. but more about that day later…

travel tuesday | london guide love

it wasn’t ony the weekendtrip to LONDON i told you about yesterday, that increased my wish to see this beautiful city so much. i mean realy see it. ideally with a little much more time than we had. i drove me slightly crazy, that we were rushing all about the lovely places.
luzia pimpinella BLOG | travel tuesday | buchvorstellung : london städteführer jenseits des mainstream | book reviews: london city guides with tips off the beaten tracks

next time i travel to london i want to be more relaxed, take my time and really enjoy everything… i’m already well prepared. i purchased these two awesome LONDON TRAVEL GUIDES some time ago and i am totally enthusiastic about them. that’s why i want to share them with you guys. after all i know there are many london fans among you. OK, after browsing through these books you probably realize that a long weekend is not enough to explore the pretty places of the city, a week neither and even a month isn’t sufficient… but well. that’s the crux with amazing cities!

luzia pimpinella BLOG | travel tuesday | buchvorstellung städteführer : london style guide - restaurants, hotels, shops | city guide review: london style guide - eat sleep, shop

the first book is the LONDON STYLE GUIDE eat * sleep *shop by author saska graville. it has a wonderful, high quality surface feel and is beautifully photographed. it’s full [i mean brimfull!] with restaurant-, hotel- and shopping-tips off the beaten tracks of the “normal” mainstream city guides. so refreshing! the locations are sorted by urban quarters and each chapter includes a small street map graphic. you will find the most beautiful places in the city, so many gems actually. and in between there are the personal stories of the people behind these places in the column “meet the londoner”. did i say awsome yet?

luzia pimpinella BLOG | travel tuesday | buchvorstellung städteführer : indepentent london - coler shopping führer | city guide review: independent london - store guide

the second little book is called INDEPENDENT LONDON store guide. another small sized, pretty city guide that sends you off to the coolest, most extraordinary and most beautiful shops in london. the chapters are also sorted by district and include a street map to find the position of the shops. i really can’t wait to see all these places. OK, maybe i won’t see them all… but i will defnitely try to see many!
if you’re travelling to london soon, you should check these guides out… you probably never ever discovered so much.

after my lovely saturday on the ILE DE RÉ the other day, i hit the road again to return to continental france. my journey through the POITOU CHARENTES region should lead me to lush greens… and i really mean green, if i say green!

but before i left the island i had to stop for a while at the little village LA FLOTTE which was on my way. reading about the ile de ré i had learned that this place belongs to “les plus belles villages de france”. it’s an award for the most beautiful villages with cultural heritage. you understand i couldn’t just pass by…

luzia pimpinella BLOG | travel tuesday | das dörfchen la flotte auf der ile de ré, frankreich | the village la flotte on the ile de ré, france

i parked my car a little distance outside and took a walk into the center of the village. it was late sunday morning, almost noon and there wasn’t anyone on the streets or in the alleys. really nobody! i like what i saw though… white, limewashed houses and the same pale white shutters i liked at saint martin de ré so much. also pretty flowers in every small corner.

at least at the seafront i saw some guys preparing for guests at their restaurants. so eventually and somehow people would come from somewhere. probably hungry people. but at that moment even the pretty carousel waited for some children’s laughter.

and then i saw an archway with a sign that said “marché”. i didn’t think there would really be a local market on sunday morning, but when i went through i found myself in midst of pulsing life! the market booths stood side by side, offering the most delicious stuff and there were masses of people chattering and doing their groceries.

but were did all these people come from? i mean, the streets were deserted! this made me suspect (for the first but not for the last time during my journey!) that french people don’t go anywhere, they apparate! they apparate preferably at places where good food can be found. they don’t walk, they suddenly appear. seriously. they can do it, like in the harry potter books! i’m sure. mabe they are guided by the delicious smell of delicacies. i mean, after all good food is french priority no.1 …

.. and looking at all this deliciousness, it’s no surprise, right? the french really know how to enjoy. unfortunately i couldn’t buy that much, although the cheese and smoked sausages really made me drool. i got myself a fresh baguette with me to nosh on my drive before i walked back to my car.

how we jumped the waiting line at the colosseum in rome | if there’s one thing we do have a talent for while travelling, then it’s to arrive at a famous landmark just at blistering noonday heat. that is really so very pimpinell-ish. so it’s clear it was all the same when we went to see the COLOSSEUM in ROME last summer.
luzia pimpinella BLOG | travel tuesday | wie wir die warteschlange am colosseum in rom übersprangen | how we jumped the waiting line at the colosseum in rome

[ah yes… i you’re wondering now if i not only switched to a new and more summerly blog header but also messed around with the time-space continuum… no, i didn’t. of course it’s not tuesday today! but i planned this posting for tuesday until my technical equipment decided to take some days off quite spontaneously. but who cares… rome is always a good idea! ;) ]

luzia pimpinella BLOG | travel tuesday | wie wir die warteschlange am colosseum in rom übersprangen | how we jumped the waiting line at the colosseum in rome

so, back to the colosseum where it felt like 45° C in the shadows when we arrived. at least we knew,  looking at the hundreds of meters of waiting line, that we weren’t the only ones with a suboptimal timing for sightseeing… and we were quite pleased about the booths around the place selling not only kitschy souvenirs but also pretty pink UMBRELLAS. 3 euros could have been invested worse.

we didn’t get ourselves some fancy gladiator sandals for visiting the colosseum. we spent our money on some more clever thing. maybe you know already that we’re true fans of the lonely planet travel guides because of the small but smart tipps they provide. and also this time the ROME city guide didn’t fail. it told us not to purchase our tickets at the colosseum itself, but just around the corner at the entrance at the PALATINO [Via di San Gregorio 30]. the tickets are not only valid for the palatino, but also for the FORUM ROMANUM and the COLOSSEUM. ha! good thing, because there is are no long lines at that place.

luzia pimpinella BLOG | travel tuesday | familien-reise-schnappschuss im colosseum in rom | family travel snapshot at the colosseum in rome

and then we just skipped the waiting with the masses part and couldn’t stop grinning. we jumped right into the lion’s den.

well, if you plan in advance and you know exactely when you want to visit one tourist attraction, you often have the possibility to book your tickets online. another elegant way to jump the queue… nothing better that that, right? for more information also check THIS.

luzia pimpinella BLOG | travel tuesday | die arena des colosseum in rom | the arena of the colosseum in rome

this place felt so deeply impressing and firghtening at the same time. i imagined the jeering crowds in the rows while life or death fights were taking place down in the arena just for amusement. like in this the picture the gorund was covered with wood ans sand back then. not only because they had lifting ramps to bring fighters and animals from the cellar vaults up into the battle. but also to let all the blood drain somewhere. really a dreadful piece of human history.
let us skip to something more gleeful again please…

too bad, that we found a souvenir booth selling little gladiator helmets only after we left the colosseum. in donkey size!

travel tuesday | kleiner großer NYC marktführer

luzia pimpinella BLOG | travel tuesday | reiseführer für alle NYC märkte | travel guide to all new york city markets

i love NEW YORK and i love markets of any kind. the combination of both is complete happiness for me. i’ve been wanting to show you this neat little book for so long now: MARKETS OF NEW YORK CITY… a guide to the best artisan, farmer, food and flea markets. and there is a whole bunch of great markets in NYC! we could travel to NYC for the next 20 years to explore them. of course this book also shows our favorite [i think i must say so far favorite…] market places…

luzia pimpinella BLOG | travel tuesday | reiseführer für alle NYC märkte: brooklyn flea market | travel guide to all new york city markets: brooklyn flea market

no new york trip without visiting the BROOKLYN FLEA MARKET! the one in FORT GREENE [if you get hungry along the way don’t miss to have an amazing yummy pizza from PIZZA MOTO BROOKLYN!] or  the one in the most beautiful old bank building at ONE HANSON PLACE. unfortunately we missed the one at SMORGASBURG at the brooklyn bridge the last time, due to some wet and windy weather conditions called SANDY. OK, next time then!

luzia pimpinella BLOG | travel tuesday | reiseführer für alle NYC märkte: chelsea market | travel guide to all new york city markets: chelsea market

another favorite place in the city… the CHELSEA MARKET, in the former cookie factory where the OREO was invented. the halloween decoration in october alone is worth stopping by and so is a burger  at  FRIEDMAN’S LUNCH. along the way you can shop delicate food and have a good time, even if it rains.

the place where new yorkers do their groceries: UNION SQUARE GREENMARKET. we rarely cook ourselves when we travel, but we enjoy going there anyway. having a coffee to go, sit down on a bench and watching people is so nice!

luzia pimpinella BLOG | travel tuesday | reiseführer für alle NYC märkte: hell's kitchen fleamarket | travel guide to all new york city markets: hell's kitchen fleamarket

this is the first new york flea market we ever went to: the HELL’S KITCHEN FLEAMARKET. i can’t believe that i only have these three pictures from back than! it feels like ages ago.

there are really countless markets in this fantastic city and they are all in this tiny book! so if you love NEW YORK you will probably love this market guide, too! it seems that it’s not regularly available anymore [i once bought it at an antropologie store], but used issues are still available HERE. and if you like to have more actual information about markets that are taking place right now, check this ONLINE GUIDE.

sometimes you don’t have to travel that far away to see a lot. our pentecoast trip was a quite small one, but we it was like a journey around almost half of the world….

luzia pipinella BLOG | travel tuesday | giraffen im erlebnis-zoo hannover | giraffes at the zoo hannover, germany

we went to the ZOO HANNOVER. there we went on a journey from africa to canada and on to australia and india… a little world trip indeed.

luzia pipinella BLOG | travel tuesday | ein tag im erlebnis-zoo hannover | a day at the zoo hannover, germany

luzia pipinella BLOG | travel tuesday | flamingos im erlebnis-zoo hannover | flamingos at the zoo hannover, germany

the zoo was established in 1865, but it changed a lot since then. nowadays there are several themed areas that were built to offer as much natural environment as possible for the animals, including diverse options to withdraw. at the same the scenery offers a unique and exotic zoo experience for the visitors. we’ver never been so enthusiastic about any zoo we visited so far.
i wonder if sleeping hile standing on just one leg is really relaxing!?

black, white and coral red seem to be absolutely hip. not only looking at the fashion of my sister but also looking at the animals. although luzie pointed out that the make-up attemps of the birds ended up in a kinda flop.

meerkats! they are so small but they easily steal the bigger animals the show. one could watch these cute guys for hours.

luzia pipinella BLOG | travel tuesday | yukon bay themenwelt und junge waldbisons im erlebnis-zoo hannover | yukon bay world and young forest bisons at the zoo hannover, germany

the two teen bison boys were practicing a duel and were jumping around like crazy! {i think that the right one looks like the grüffelo somehow, doesn’t it?} daddy wood bison was watchig this scene with parental gentleness.

luzia pipinella BLOG | travel tuesday | eisbären im erlebnis-zoo hannover | polar bears at the zoo hannover, germany

the most amazing experience about the YUKON BAY area was watching the polar bears. it saddens one’s heart to think that maybe these majestic animal will only find home in zoos in the future.

luzia pipinella BLOG | travel tuesday | schwimmende eisbären im erlebnis-zoo hannover | swimming polar bears at the zoo hannover, germany

first the polar bears were chilling in the sun. but we were so lucky to experience them swimming. i missed to catch the massive splash with my camera but i was able to take some underwater pictures… it was breathtaking. dd you ever saw a polar bear booty that near?

luzia pipinella BLOG | travel tuesday | unterwasser fotos der eisbären im erlebnis-zoo hannover | unterwater shots of polar bears at the zoo hannover, germany

what an amazing beauty! look at these paws! we couldn’t hardly detatch ourselves from this view so we didn’t leave until the bathing fun was over.

luzia pipinella BLOG | travel tuesday | känguru im erlebnis-zoo hannover | kangaroo at the zoo hannover, germany

the kangaroos were also chilling lazily. i really liked the way they created the signs at many compounds. they were giving information for children in an appropriate and interesting way. this is how learning works together with fun.
did i tell you how amazingly lucky we were concerning the weather? saturday it was raining, monday too… only our sunday trip was blesssed with bright sunshine! yay.

luzia pipinella BLOG | travel tuesday | pelikane streicheln im erlebnis-zoo hannover | petting-zone for pelicans at the zoo hannover, germany

first i was doubtful that there was a petting zone for pelicans. i couldn’t imagine that the pelicans really liked o be touched by so many zoo visitors. but they obviously they enjoyed being stroked … they would have been able so get away to their island at any time for being out of reach. but they stayed. i never tought pelican feathers would be so very soft.

luzia pipinella BLOG | travel tuesday | affen im dschungelalast des erlebnis-zoo hannover | monkeys at the jungle palace of the zoo hannover, germany

the INDIA area and it’s jungle palace was so beautiful. it even smelled like india… it smelled like the incense sticks in indian temples.

the big elephant family was beyond adorable. the zoo is expecting three new baby elephants in 2013 by the way.  total cuteness! i was totally in love with this little guy who was constantly twiddeling with it’s mother.

travel tuesday | in meiner handtasche

i confess that sometimes {actually
always} i wish for a personal handbag carrier {not to mention a
personal suitcase carrier} to lug around all the stuff i’m carrying with
me while travelling. at the end of the day i always know feel, what i
have been moving around. nevertheless i am no match for the massive handbag content small FEE is carrying around every day. how the heck does a small person like her manage to carry all that stuff? {i suspect that secretly she has a personal
handbag carrier}.

the content of my everyday handbag looks
so very manageable, it wouldn’t even give a proper picture, but when i’m travelling it contains this:

luzia pimpinella BLOG | travel tuesday | was ich beim reisen in meiner handtasche habe | what i have in my handbag when travelling

  • meine kamera – hochgradig
    aufschreiben.
  • einen leichten stoffbeutel – für
    spontane einkaufsattacken
  • dann noch mein sagenumwobenes
„für-alle-fälle-täschchen” – damit bin ich für alle
eventualitäten gewappnet. darin ist: eine mini-packung
    feuchttücher, ein kleines fläschchen handdesinfektionsgel,
papiertaschentücher, pflaster in verschiedenen größen {auch
spezielle blasenpfaster}, ein paar kopfschmerztabletten {para, ibu,
aspirin, alles dabei}, blistex gegen rauhe lippen, arnika-globoli

  • my camera – high priority importance, i don’t go anywhere without it
  • a spare lens cap – unfortunately i’m good in losing or misplacing them
  • a second camera battery – also very important, it would be a desaster if the camera gave up working
  • a second memory card with at least 8 free GB for even more shots
  • a lens cleaning cloth –against greasy fingerprints, rain drops, saltwater spray and dust on the lens
  • my wallet – ususally it’s important too, but sometimes i leave it, when i’m travelling with my finance minister by my side
  • my iPhone {not on the photo as i needed it to take this shot} – essential for instagram addicts like me
  • a small external USB recharger – so i don’t have to panic if the mobile phone runs out of energy and there’s no socket around
  • a small journal and a pencil – if you got a certain age it’s better to note funny, interesting and exciting travel stories and useful information promptly
  • a light tote bag – for sudden shopping attacks
  • and then there is my legendary little “just-in-case-purse” – with this i’m literally prepared for everything. it contains: a small package of wet wipes, a small hand sanitizer, paper tissues, band aids in different sizes {also special ones for feet blisters}, a few headache pills {para, ibu,
aspirin, got them all}, blistex against sore lips, arnica globules against goose eggs and bruises, a piece of dental floss and typical girl’s hygene stuff

voilà, c’est ca! i have been laughed at several times for this wonder purse, but at the end of the day some people seem to appreciate it and it’s content as well… do you agree, sonni? ;)

and what are you lugging around with you?

travel tuesday | L.A. farmers market

i still think that LOS ANGELES suffers a bit from a bad image among california travellers… so i’d like to carry on polishing it up a bit. to visit L.A. in the company of lovely friends surely is something special, but i really think you’ll like our destination we headed for after the day at the GETTY CENTER, too.

we were a little tired and had a growling stomach when we started off to the FARMERS MARKET. the market is a real landmark since 1934. it makes the foodie’s heart beat faster. you can find all american classic food next to all kinds of ethnic cuisines – asian, latin-american and oriental. there are grocery stores, a butcher shop and little shops with specialities all over this outdoor food court. definitely a good place for growling stomaches!

in the back part of the store you can really find a pharmacy, an authentic one selling aspirin and such. in the front they have a gift shop selling funny things like the most famous TV moms in a paperdoll book {say hello to peggy bundy}, liberace drawing books, monkey nesting dolls, crafty stuff and whatever silly toys you may think of.

PROST! ;)
you can see the legendary root beer float in the right picture by the way {check out THIS how to make it, if you like to try it}. it was massively sweet and constantly bubbling along {obviously}. i felt like having a salty salami sandwich afterwards. and well, you probably shouldn’t take the rest into the car with you. not good… not at all. what a sticky mess. CHEERS! ;)

P.S.  do you know this cool VIDEO of the route 66 in time-lapse? total wanderlust.

well, i told you last week… it’s almost impossible for me to put all my favorite travel shots from MÉRIDA into just one posting. but i tried anyway. so the following turned out to be a bit longer…
the quite lovely thing about mérida is, that this city is a tourist town, but on the whole it doesn’t seem too touristic. it’s really no secret gem for yucatán travellers anymore but it gives you the feeling that it still is one. there are so many times you feel like the only stanger at this place… it was awesome.

like in every mexican city or village, the zócalo, the central square is the lively heart of town. in this case it’s the PLAZA GRANDE. the pretty park with trees and {also} shady benches is surrounded by beautiful historical architecture. for example the CATEDRAL DE SAN ILDEFONSO, which is a spiritual union of spanish and mayan history as people used stones from an ancient maya temple to construct it. the lovely green colonial building  in the last picture is the  PALACIO DE GOBIERNO.  you can walk inside to have a look at the amazing murals painted by local artist FERNANDO CASTRO PACHECO. you can also find the tourist office at the ground floor of this building by the way. there are free guided tours around the historical places available.

it’s nice and easy to explore mérida by foot. sometimes you have to be careful though because the sidewalks can be very narrow and the traffic’s passing by real close. i love to just walk around and watch real life going on.

horse drawn carriages can bee seen all aound the place {an explicit sign that we were not the only tourists in the city}. i love to make a tourist-fool out of myself once in a while. it’s so much fun and after all little donkey wanted that ride so baaadly…

i think i mentioned {quite several times} that i really love to visit local markets wherever we go. you can watch people, try local food, buy some vegetables and stuff to have a picnic… a market is always an inspiring place to be. in mérida it’s the MERCADO MUNICIPAL LUCAS DE GÁLVEZ  {the municipal market} where life happens. i found a nice artikle about the market HERE by the way, if you’re interested.

every saturday evening at 8 p.m. the streets around the plaza grande will be closed up for traffic. every weekend the people of mérida celebrate the street festival “el corazón de mérida” … colorful, happy, delicious and with music and public dance. we planned our stay at the city over a weekend to be able to attend this event and it’s lovely hustle and bustle… it was totally worth it.

in front of the PALACIO MUNICIPAL {the city hall} hundreds of couples swayed all over the place to the sound of a  MARIACHI band. it was such a lovely atmoshpere. mr. P. and i tried a little dance ourselves {unfortunately without any photo proof} but stopped, as we felt like left-footed dorks comparing to the lithe moves of the mexicans.

even on the smaller squares around the center life’s bursting on saturday nights. folklore dancing {tradional as well as modern} and singing  performances of local clubs are on stage. there are booth with tacos, enchiladas & such, stands selling marquesitas and churros {found a nice recipe HERE by the way} and ice cream… and the most lovely thing about it is, that these cultural events are organizied by locals and for locals. we hardly saw any tourist at this place on that evening we spent there… it was awesome.

i didn’t bring a traditional HUIPIL from this trip. i still think it’s a bummer i didn’t. but we brought lots of sweet travel memories and tons of photographs, as you can see… for me these are the most precious souvenirs anyway.

there are cities, where you you wish you had a few more days to stay than you planned for your travels. MÉRIDA in yucatán, mexico was a place like this for me. time went by too fast and we all wished we could have stayed a bit longer.

browsing through my photographs from mérida i realized that there are far too many impressions to squeeze them into just one posting. so i thought, i better don’t rush and take it slow when it comes to talk about my love for this city.

after all the mexicans don’t like to rush things either and they’re right. how many times do we feel like being hunted by el diablo, hurrying through our lives? … we should better stop for a siesta once in a while. for example here:

the café EL HOYO is a lovely place to take a break in mérida. the guests are mostly young people. they have very good latte and small, yummy snacks that aren’t small at all but bursting your plate. if you want to send a picture of your huge nutella waffles home you can do so as they do offer free wifi. there is a little pretty patio in the back to enjoy your meal or drink outside. i especially loved the adorable tiles…
have you been in mérida before? what was your favorite hang out place?

P.S. by the way… HERE you can find all my yucatán MEXICO travel photographs and reports published so far.
BOOKS TRAVEL

travel tuesday | weird california

we really have tons of travel guides in our book shelves, but we only have one really weird example… WEIRD CALIFORNIA: your travel guide to california’s local legends and best kept secrets! this book was a cool gift from NANCY [fledge flying is easy]. too bad that we got it at the end of our california ROADTRIP, otherwise we probably would have added some stops at quite odd places to our tour…

… maybe we would have seen abandonned places and i would have gone on a photo hunt at the LOST RESORTS of the SALTON SEA…and maybe we would have sticked three more gums to the BUBBLEGUM ALLEY in san luis obispo.

… maybe we’d have seen mysterious stones moving all by themselves in the DEATH VALLEY, the ROVING ROCKS of racetrack playa. then at least i would have had a thrilling story why i got myself a sunstroke there.

… we surely would have seen the SALVATION MOUNTAIN in niland that i already spotted in so many instagram pictures. and we would have stopped by elmer long’s BOTTLE TREE RANCH just outside helendale along the ROUTE 66

… i’m not sure if we would have been brave enough to search for GRAM PARSON‘s grave at cap rock in the JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK at night. [check out the DEATH chapter behind the link! very weird.]

… i guess we would have been less scared by the little MUNCHKINS and their homes in LA JOLLA. or maybe they don’t exist at all? ;) who knows. and then… after all that almost unbearable excitement and trill… we would have gone for a really HUGE DONUT at RANDY’S. we’d have a blast. i tell you.
well,  if you wanted to see the world’s largest rubber band ball like forever or your heart’s longing for catching ghosts at haunted places. if you want to explore supposed sites of UFO crashs, hear screaming trees scream or if you want to search for the underground city of the LIZARD PEOPLE. if you prefer strolling over a spooky cemetery rather than through a boring ait-conditioned mall. if las vegas is not weird enough for you… then this is your california guide!  have fun!

travel tuesday | getty center L.A.

looking at the comments on my last TRAVEL TUESDAY posting i got the feeling that L.A.’s reputation is worse than it deserves to be. so i’d like to take up the dudgels for LOS ANGELES today! it has so much more to offer than hollywood shallowness and superfancy in-crowd rodeo drive fuss…

… the GETTY CENTER for example! the amazing stone and glass and building complex built by architekt RICHARD MEIER is located in the BRENTWOOD hills overlooking the city in the most awesome way. for lovers of achitecture it’s like a dream that came true all in white. arriving the place i was instantly smitty by CHARLES RAY’S sculpure BOY WITH FROG.

admission to the getty center and all of it’s exhibitions is free by the way, you only have to pay a parking fee at the entrance. a train takes you from the parking lot to the museum.

the day was more than perfect. we enjoyed our time together with NANCY [fledge flying is easy] and her adorable daughter ANNA. the sky was cloudless and all that blue even brightened up the white of the building. the colors and the lines seemed so unnatural crisp that day. it was just amazing.

the art collection of the GETTY MUSEUM is surely one of the comprehensive in the world. it was originally carried together by the oil-tycoon and billionaire JEAN PAUL GETTY. besides the  permanent exhibit [including the iris by VAN GOGH!] the museum comes up with temporary exhibitions that are beyond awesome. we saw stunning CUBA PHOTOGRAPHY by walker evans and a collection of french furniture, clothes and luxury items at the PARIS: LIFE & LUXURY exhibition.

though despite all the impressing exhibits, i really felt that the star of the getty center is the architecture itself and also the wonderful garden.

you feel a bit like alice in wonderland under the giant, shady “bougainvillea umbrellas” and looking at the box tree labyrinth.

the GARDEN [designed by ROBERT IRWIN] radiates an athmosphere of calmness and invites the visitor to rest a little. i really loved it.

if you do not only want to enjoy the marvelous view by day but see the sunset over L.A., you should plan your visit on saturdays. the getty center is open until 9 p.m. then. check out more details about the OPENING HOURS here.

we all enjoyed that day at the getty a lot. but the next time i really want to see the sunset as well. unconditionally.

as you probably know by now, i always find a reason to return to a place i loved…
