travel tuesday | toronto kensington market & chinatown

today it’s TORONTO once again…well, being on a citytrip we always seek for the charming quirky corners of the town. i think the many assumed MUST GO-places where people go to stroll and to shop are dead boring. wherever you go, it always looks the same: brand chains designer stores and fancy prices. it’s so exchangeable. i don’t need that. i don’t need the big malls, like the EATON MALL, either.

but even nicer then, when there are neighborhoods like a CHINATOWN to explore. toronto’s chinatown might not be that picturesque like the one in L.A. or in SAN FRANCISCO, but it can definitely offer some charming quirky moments.

all smiles colgate families on toothpaste boxes, kitsch and caboodle, fruit- and vegetable stands, spices, [smelly] dried fish, roast peking duck in the window… chinatown is also a trip into another kind of culture.

i always adore these true-to-life plastic meals displayed in the windows as a kind of paper menu substitute. i loved to have them and display them on our kitchen wall at home… ornamental plates with food on the wall would be freakin’ funny, don’t you think?

and then there is KENSINGTON MARKET as a quirky kind of neighborhood. located between college and dundas street, west of spadina avenue, it’s not only marked by it’s victorian architecture but also by it’s lively hippy flair.

that day we took a walk at kensington was CANADA DAY the national holiday of the canadians. it was a pity that most of the shops were closed. but we enjoyed our walk along the streets with all the cafés, restaurants, grocery stores, vintage and vinyl shops and shops with all kinds of funny stuff anyway. you can find an awesome shop, café and restaurant overview HERE by the way.

… and at BUNGALOW [beware, there’s some dibadibadubidu-music when clicking the link! ;)] i was regretting not having booked a big container for shipping all the awesome vintage stuff i saw here [and i would see later on our trip] back home to germany.

well, i really must admit, that in toronto i somehow missed that huge love flash, that i often feel at places we travel. i don’t know exactly what the reason was… maybe i found toronto too “unspecific”, maybe i’m just a shallow, spoiled dork? i have no idea. i almost feel sorry because of that, but that’s just the way i experienced it. but i must also say that places like KENSINGTON MARKET really made me feel reconciled again. long live quirkiness!

P.S. dear lovelies, originally i planned to post about this trip in chronological order…. but i feel urged to tell things earlier than they happened, just because they are closer to my heart. i think a little disorder potpourri doesn’t hurt anyone, right? so next week i’ll jump to wherever my heart tells me. or maybe YOU [which probably means the ones of you who followed our trip in real-time on INSTAGRAM] do have any preference for me, what story to tell? if so… just let me know.

travel tuesday | schlumpfig blau & nass

smurf blue & wet… that’s what everybody is sooner or later when visiting the NIAGARA FALLS. getting from TORONTO to the NIAGARAFALLS took us about one and a half hours. of course we didn’t want to miss the giant waterfalls. especially mr. P. was excited to see then, as he is a real waterfall junkie.
luzia pimpinella BLOG | travel tuesday | ein tagesausflug von toronto zu den niagara fällen | a daytrip from toronto to the niagara falls

you get closer to the falls and think… whao, these are freaking huge!

you get more close and you think…. whao, it’s freaking wet! because it doesn’t take long and you have your own little “maid of the mist” by your side.

you really wouldn’t want to pop in there. the forces of natrure are elemental and my bff had forbidden to climb up on the wall holding an umbrella for a pretty picture anyway.

so we went to a ticket booth and got us three ADVENTURE PASSES fot the 4 top attractions of niagara. after all we wanted to see as much as possible around the falls. the price was $ 46,95 for an adult [adult means as of 13 years! canadians seem to be quite early mature..] and children $ 34,95. we found out that we didn’t like all of the tops, but it’s easy to be wise after the event.
we started with NIAGARA’S FURY, which was more flop than top if you ask me. you could experience the creation of niagara falls in 4D, but the animation was kind of lame … we really had so much more fun experiencing the calving of a glacier at the ZOOM in gelsenkirchen once. this show was first of all damn cold and quite unnecessarily wet in all that cold. a good climate to catch pneumonia. sorry folks, every member of the pimpinella family said the same afterwards: we didn’t need that! that’s why i have no pictures of that either, by the way! no fun, no pictures. ;)

this hole was part of the second attraction we saw: the JOURNEY BEHIND THE FALLS. it sounds a bit more exciting than it is in reality. if you manage to get to one of the two holes like this without getting claustrophobic panic attacks, standing in line in a narow tunnel… you’ll see this. a hole and all white and noise behind. not so whao, but…

.. you also have access to the platform below the falls. it is quite impressing to stand so near and watch the forces of the water. an experience worth walking around like a marge simpson lookalike. yes, simpson-yellow is dominating smurf-blue here, unless you have your own stylish rain cape with you like the little fräulein. [the capes are recycled and said to be biogradable… i really hope this is true.]

.

after that we were all excited to take our ride on the MAID OF THE MIST [at least on one of the maid of the mist boats as they do have many of them]. these boats look so tiny right in front of the giant falls facing elemental forces in the roaring water. you worry, they could be swallowed up by all that water. gives you a queasy but exciting feeling.

the queue at the entrance was long but however waiting time was tolerable and so we entered the boat surprisingly quick. and off we went. we passed by the amarican falls. don’t want to tease, but the americans really got the short end of the straw when it came to division of the niagara falls. alas! but on that other side they look like a big simpson family, too.

and then there they were! right in front of us! it was hard to take pictures, when you feel like somebody is spraying water at you with the biggest spray bottle ever… but i wouldn’t be me if i didn’t try anyway. [note to self: next time put a clear plastic bag with a hole for the lens over your camera and have a cloth right at hand for wiping the lens dry.]

the big smurf-family was deeply impressed by these forces of nature. the little sea raven wasn’t at all. dauntless it paddled the roaring water.

this smurf had the most fun of all. my mr P. in waterfall heaven! seriously…. the trip on the maid of the mist was our highlight of the day. it was overwhelming and an awesome fun! it was definitely top1!

after the boat trip we needed a little walk to relax… it was the last attraction on our adventure pass: the WHITE WATER WALK. you can see some of the wildest whitewater rapids of the world there. what an amazing  ROAR.

we three four really loved that day [except that silly fury part] and eselchen really couldn’t help doing this…

DEN regenbogen. niagara-kitsch as niagara-kitsch can. herrlich.
the whole day i hoped for this, and finally i got to see one… THE rainbow. niagara-kitsch as
niagara-kitsch can. awesome.

P.S a little tip along the way… parking can be quite expensive at niagara falls. it costs up to 20 bucks at some spots, so it’s always worth to check out the parking possibilities in advance. we parked our car at the lot in front of the SKYLON TOWER. 5 bucks! for a happy travel wallet!

travel tuesday | our eats and sleep in toronto

oh man… where to begin after a three week roadtrip through some canadian cities and along new englands coast? where to start with so many experiences and impressions and even more pictures? i’d love to show and tell everything at once. but it’s probably better to start with the beginning of our trip… in TORONTO. and with the essentials…. eat and sleep… and eat!

we had our very first canadian breakfast at the SENATOR diner… a recommendation of our lovely  apartment host brenna. so it’s not quite true that this place is only a tourist magnet, because also locals dine here. but it’s true that the restaurant is the oldest of whole toronto… and that the food there is very yummy.

the servings are sumptious, like you expect it in north america. you hardly handle them. the layers of french toast [with a pinch of cinnamon!] made the whole family happy. the huevos rancheros – served all day –  fill you up for half a day! the latte comes in huge mugs. a super friendly talk with the lovely waitress, who has relatives living here in germany in hamburg and augsburg, is on top and for free… als well as the coffee refill [something that the mister really loooves!]. awesome!
